Inside Crystal River, Issue #27
August 28, 2026
Good morning, Crystal River! Our editorial board weighs in on Sheriff Vincent's traffic enforcement push, Riverwalk talks with the new owners of Pete's Pier move forward (with a hidden cost warning attached), Lecanto commissioners vote to keep a controversial traffic median in place, and county commissioners clear the way for 670 new homes off State Road 200.
Elsewhere, Citrus County put $2.05 million in state housing funds to work helping local families, Citrus Libraries is making reading more accessible with thousands of large-print books and audiobooks, the Nature Coast Orchid Society held its popular annual auction, and health officials are stepping up mosquito control after the county's first locally acquired dengue case.
On the school front, the Lady Pirates swept Dunnellon in volleyball this week. Plus, a packed weekend of events, live music, and food trucks around town, and if you need an excuse to treat yourself, it's National Cherry Turnover Day, enjoy a flaky one and have a great Friday!

Sheriff David Vincent promised more traffic enforcement earlier this year, and deputies are delivering, now making roughly 2,000 traffic stops a week across Citrus County. The Chronicle's editorial board says that's a meaningful step, but the real measure of success shouldn't be the number of stops made. The goal, in the board's view, should stay simple: safer roads and fewer crashes for everyone who drives them. Read More -->
Crystal River's Riverwalk discussions with the new owners of Pete's Pier are moving forward, city officials say. But at least one council member is raising concerns about a hidden cost that could ultimately land on taxpayers. The project remains in active discussion as the city works out the details. A traffic median meant to improve safety along a busy Lecanto corridor has instead created headaches for nearby businesses. County commissioners considered removing it after hearing those concerns, but ultimately voted 3-2 to leave the median in place. The decision means the businesses affected will need to keep adapting to the current traffic flow. Read More -->
Neighbors objected, and the county's Planning and Development Commission recommended denial, but county commissioners voted 3-2 to approve a development that will bring 670 new homes off State Road 200. The tight vote came despite the earlier recommendation against the project. It's one of the larger residential developments to clear a county vote this year. Read More -->
A little help can go a long way. Citrus County used $2.05 million in state housing funds to assist 97 households, and officials say that investment helped generate nearly $6.45 million in total housing activity locally. The funding is aimed at easing the cost of housing for residents who need it most. Read More -->
Citrus Libraries wants reading to be for everyone, and its collection backs that up. The system now carries more than 9,000 large-print books along with thousands of audiobooks, giving residents with vision or reading challenges more ways to enjoy a good story. It's part of a broader push to make the library system's resources easier to use for the whole community. Read More -->
Orchid lovers know how it goes: one plant becomes five, five become 25, and before long you're hooked. More than 200 orchids went under the hammer at the Nature Coast Orchid Society's annual auction, giving local growers and first-time buyers alike a chance to add to their collections. The yearly event has become a favorite stop for the area's plant enthusiasts. Read More -->
Public Safety News
Citrus County has confirmed its first locally acquired case of dengue, meaning the infection was contracted here rather than while traveling. Health officials are stepping up mosquito control efforts in response and are urging residents to protect themselves from bites and eliminate standing water around their properties. County officials say vigilance will be key to preventing further spread. Read More -->
